My First Time: Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi

Posted by

You can’t go to the Giraffe center in Nairobi without going to the Elephant Orphanage. As soon as I left the Giraffe Center, I wanted to go straight to the Elephant Orphanage but I had to wait a little over 2 weeks because it’s one activity a month for the next 6 years.

If you are new to my blog, last year on my 24th birthday, I set one very simple goal, to travel the world and to try as many new experiences as I can before I am 30. No matter how small or big, every month, I must do something I have never done before. It could either be something I don’t know or something I fear. We went rock climbing, we went to Cameroon, we did yoga and this month I got sprinkled with mud by elephants. How great is life? That’s the best thing that has happened to me this year so far. The elephants thought I was part of the family.

The overall experience was fun, although I wish we could get a better background of where the elephant’s orphanage started and why. They briefly introduced each elephant, we watched them play, act silly, get perverted… etc. They slightly went into details about the elephants with the saddest history, like one who got shot in the knee trying to save his mother who was taking bullets from poachers.

To further contribute to the cause, you can adopt an elephant for only $50/year.

“Yes, you can touch the Elephants”

By the end of it all. I was covered with mud, from my hair, my face, to my shoes. Please don’t wear white if you plan on visiting and make sure you get there by 11 AM because the Elephant orphanage allows visitors only between 11 AM and 12noon and entrance is 500ksh standard for all ages and nationalities. Enjoy!

  1. This is certainly the life. Haven’t been to the orphanage in quite some time myself. I should look for time for such activities. You look great with short hair by the way.
